Chapter Nine

Eryn's little encounter with Ferris had sent her thoughts and emotions into turmoil all over again. Just when she had begun to get a grip on herself.

She had no idea why he'd wanted to talk to her of all people. She'd given him no reason to. Unless he had sensed how he made her feel. Could it be that the feeling was mutual?

Her heart jumped a few beats before she got herself under control. It didn't change anything. He was still related to the queen. And she was still unworthy.

Eryn forced herself back into action and all but ran out of the Great Hall. She'd barely made it out the door when she bumped into Yorrick.

"What was that all about?" Yorrick's stare made Eryn uncomfortable.

Now what did he want?

"What are you talking about?" she countered.

"The warlock. What did he want with you? Or rather, what did you want with him?"

Yorrick didn't seem his usual, calm self. Of course, they were all on edge, but she'd never known him to be the suspicious type.

"Oh, you know…. Unfinished business from the battle," Eryn said. Lying wasn't one of her strengths. "I was the one who captured him, if you remember."

"How about earlier tonight? Did you go see him in the dungeons to discuss this so-called unfinished business then too?"

"What in the world?" Eryn's heart sank. How did he know about that?

Her initial shock was quickly replaced with anger. "Have you been following me around, Yorrick?"

Now it was his turn to take a step back. His face turned ashen, and then bright red.

"I'm head of the Castle Guard. I ought to know what goes on in these walls!" His tone was defensive now.

She'd struck a nerve. In any case, there was no point denying she'd visited the warlock in his cell. Even the king and queen knew about that already.

"And I'm second in command to Rhea, our General. If I'm down in the dungeons, you can bet on it that I'm there with her blessing," Eryn snapped.

Yorrick took a step forward and loomed over her, but she didn't flinch or back down. How quickly things changed in these walls.

"I thought we were friends. Now you treat me as the enemy?" Eryn hissed.

Yorrick exhaled and broke eye contact. "Eryn…. That's not what I meant."

She continued to glare at him. What the hell was he thinking? Had he been following her around earlier also? All those little conversations out on the sea wall, the random encounters outside the library…. Had it all been an elaborate plan of his, rather than mere coincidence?

Rhea had noticed it and warned her. She had taken it as something else, professional rivalry between the Army and Castle Guard. But the truth had become apparent tonight.

"I'm only worried for your safety, Eryn!" Yorrick pleaded.

Eryn shook her head; she was having none of it. "You have a funny way of showing your concern."

"We are friends, though. Aren't we?" he asked.

She looked up again into his eyes, but made sure there was no warmth in her gaze.
